Review: Monsters vs. Aliens Takes No Chances, Doesn’t Try To Impress March 30, 2009

The sudden surge in 3D cinema is exciting yet forboding. In a medium that is creatively exhausted visually, there’s an opportunity waiting to be seized that could change the way we view and enjoy movies. However, such a process is expensive, and the audience reaction is unpredictable, so it’s not surprising that a studio like Dreamworks isn’t taking any chances with the medium in the same way most studios haven’t for the past 50 years. Instead, Monsters vs. Aliens just takes advantage of the recent popularity and dresses up another tired story with some semi-fancy 3D visuals because audiences bought into the same movie with Shrek 3 and the Madagascar movies. Sean Penn, Jim Carrey, Benicio Del Toro To Be The Three Stooges March 26, 2009

The Farrely Brother’s modern rendition of The Three Stooges apparently has Sean Penn, Jim Carrey and Benicio Del Toro picked out as the slapstick trio. I know, right? Last casting you’d expect, but very interesting nonetheless. More surprisingly is that Jim Carrey is in talks to be Curley, and will have to gain 40 pounds to look more like the original Jerome Howard. Sean Penn will play Larry and Benicio Del Toro will play Moe. This movie isn’t set up to be a biopic like movies in the past have been. The Farrely Brother’s intend for this feature-length film to play out as an adventure in the same manner that the original shorts from Disney did. (more…)

My childhood dreams have come to life! I’ve been waiting for this film for so long, anticipating it since I first heard that what was one of my most favorite books as a kid was going to be adapted for the screen. This morning the trailer aired, and I found it moving, exciting, genuine and simply beautiful. Spike Jonze is really going to make this movie everything I wanted it to be and probably more, completely magical and enchanting. Setting the trailer to an alternate version of “Wake Up” by The Arcade Fire was brilliant, too. Enough raving, though, check out the trailer after the jump.
Theatrical Trailer For Kaz Kiriya’s GOEMON March 23, 2009

Most people probably haven’t heard of GOEMON, and most probably won’t see it, but I think this looks pretty stunning and I hope Warner Brothers does well in distributing this in the U.S., although there’s been no news as to when they might. The theatrical trailer hit the internet recently, thanks to Twitch, and I’m quite interested by what’s going on here. The visual style Kaz Kiriya’s using is really reminiscent of video games, almost Soul Caliber-esque sometimes, both in the framing and the colors and CG going on, and the characters remind me more of anime characters than people. I’ve never really seen these things applied to a live-action cinematic format, maybe by my own lack of looking, but it has me intrigued and excited now! Trailer below the jump!

I had only vaguely heard of Russel Mulcahy’s (Highlander, Resident Evil: Extinction) new film Give ‘Em Hell Malone, but after seeing this trailer, I’m just as excited for this as I am for Public Enemies. It’s violent, it’s gritty, and it feels like it’s capturing the feel of the time period more accurately than most films, the character’s looking more shabby and authentic from it’s lower budget quality than the magnificent charismas and elaborate crime rings we’re used to seeing out of films about this time period. The film stars Thomas Jane, a “tough as nails” private investigator protecting a valuable secret from various thugs and gangsters, and Elsa Patakey, who just appears to be the hot, female interest. Some of the people who more regularly check the site may have noticed that not much has been going on here despite the abundance of film news. Being the sole blogger on the site currently, when I went on a trip to Denver over Spring Break, I didn’t have much ability to blog outside of a few twitter messages from my iPhone. Simple enough. However, blogging will return to a healthy amount, and there will be plenty on the site again shortly enough. Additionally, Film Dig has some exciting news about some updates to the site that will go into effect hopefully soon! (more…)
Sam Raimi Gives Updates on New Spiderman and Evil Dead Films March 16, 2009

With an early version of Drag Me To Hell being featured at the SXSW film festival, Sam Raimi had some chances to talk about a few of his other projects. He told MTV a little about his current, sole focus, Spiderman 4, not revealing any plot details but informing that Tobey Maguire will return as Spiderman (of course) and that although he’s not involved in casting decisions, he can’t imagine not working with Kirsten Dunst as the romantic interest and hopes that she returns for this next film. He additionally mentioned that him and his writers are going to be faithful to the comic book material with this movie, not taking plots or villain ideas from outside the Marvel Universe. As far as Evil Dead, Raimi’s talking about finding a new, young director to reboot the franchise. (more…)

Call to Action: Save Assassination of a High School President From a DVD Death March 14, 2009

Last December, the Yari Film Group went into unvoluntary bankruptcy, and because of this one of the best Sundance films of 2008 has been sitting on a shelf without any theatrical distribution. This is a true indie gem, and if something isn’t done, the film will go straigh to DVD and not have a chance to get the viewings it deserves through the theater system. Studios are still in discussions about the financial risk of this film and whether or not the film would be worth their investment to be distributed theatrically. What can you do? Peter Sciretta on /Film has asked every film blog and film blog reader to get the word out that we want to see this movie on the big screen, so head over to his site and voice your opinion. The studios are well aware of this call to action and are watching closely to see how you, the theater-going audience, will react. (more…)
YES! Raimi’s Drag Me to Hell Trailer Surfaces March 11, 2009

Oh, God, I love Sam Raimi. Out of the vein of Evil Dead II and Army of Darkness, at last he has returned to horror with Drag Me to Hell, and it won’t disappoint. I’ve always absolutely loved his work in this genre, it always being so unique in story, in character, in its horror and, of course, its delicious camp. The acting might not be as over-the-top as Bruce Campbell’s was, but I’m glad he’s not bastardizing off his cult-classics yet still retaining his style. The gypsy and the undead are so very reminescent of his old movies, and I really can’t wait to see this soon.
